Principle Software Engineer – Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Development
The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) organisation is responsible for developing key services that power Oracle's cloud solutions across all layers of the IaaS/SaaS/PaaS stack. OCI Cape Town is currently looking for hands-on engineers. We are tackling one of the most complex problems the cloud industry is facing - enabling large enterprise customers to move to the cloud. This entails moving large amounts of data, as well as migrating configuration and identity info, over some challenging network topologies while providing a "it just works" user experience. The team provides an opportunity to work across multiple different cloud services while building its own cloud native service to migrate entire workloads.

We are looking for passionate, technical leaders who
Can craft highly scalable services and make the appropriate tradeoffs between performance, reliability and maintainability
Has a solid grounding in computer science fundamentals, who would be at home picking up a new programming language or problem domain
Enjoy working in an innovative and collaborative environment
Can act as escalation points for our operational support on an on-call roster basis

Core requirements
Bsc or Msc degree in Computer Science or related field. Equivalent experience with a consistent track record may be substituted.
Typically has 7+ years or more proven experience.
Solid understanding of C, C++ or Java, and experience with scripting languages such as Python or Perl, etc.

Plus preferred experiences that we are looking for
Software development experience with distributed, highly scalable, multi-node environments
Strong understanding of virtual machine technologies, networking and storage systems
Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skillsExtensive Linux experience, both command-line and system level knowledge
Strong understanding of databases, NoSQL systems, storage and distributed persistence technologies.
Ability to design, develop and troubleshoot software programs across database, network and application stacks.

Example Responsibilities:
Improve and implement best practices across director’s organisation in software engineering.
Drives design and planning of services to identify and mitigate the risk of failure to provide highly available services.
Writes and reviews code for cloud-native services written in a microservice framework with REST-based APIs
Implement and analyse service metrics to drive service improvementsSet a high-quality bar for services right from the design stage through to production e.g. end to end testing, monitoring and alerting.
Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.

As a member of the software engineering division, you will take an active role in the definition and evolution of standard practices and procedures. You will be responsible for defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, designing and debugging of software applications or operating systems.
Work is non-routine and very sophisticated, involving the application of advanced technical/business skills in area of specialization. Leading contributor individually and as a team member, providing direction and mentoring to others. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 7 years of software engineering or related experience.
