Senior Climate Adaptation Consultant C4 EcoSolutions is a consulting company that designs and implements climate change adaptation and mitigation projects in the public and private sectors. Since our establishment in 2006, C4 EcoSolutions has worked on over 220 climate change adaptation and mitigation projects in more than 105 countries across Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean — working with a variety of clients including UN Environment, UNDP, IFC, IFAD, GIZ, FAO, Conservation International, UNICEF, UNIDO, UNESCO, CARICOM DF, GWP and the governments of a wide range of developing countries.C4 is currently seeking a Senior Climate Adaptation Consultant to join our dynamic team in Cape Town, South Africa. Our team work closely with a range of international entities, national governments, and local communities to co-develop innovative solutions to help the world's most vulnerable groups adapt to the impacts of climate change. This work includes:designing innovative adaptation projects for international climate funds, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and Adaptation Fund (AF);conducting climate change vulnerability assessments;conducting technical evaluations of climate change adaptation projects, including the development of mid-term and terminal reviews; providing technical advisory services on climate change adaptation projects under implementation; andproviding technical assistance and capacity building to governmental and non-governmental institutions, particularly regarding access to climate finance.To learn more about us please visit www.c4es.co.za.Summary Description of the Role:The Senior Climate Adaptation Consultant will take a lead role in developing climate change adaptation projects within the company portfolio. The role's primary responsibilities will include the technical design of adaptation projects, client management, stakeholder engagements, and the production of high-quality project documents. While the core workstream will be focused on developing funding proposals for new adaptation projects, opportunities may also arise to engage in technical advisory as well as monitoring and evaluation assignments for ongoing projects. Both mid and senior level consultants will be expected to perform similar work, with senior consultants responsible for the development of larger projects. In addition to leading projects themselves, the consultant is expected to support junior staff, guide them through the project development process, and provide technical input and quality assurance on project design. Mid-level consultants will receive similar input from senior consultants, creating opportunities for growth and upskilling. The project development process generally involves:  i) researching baseline conditions and development challenges in the target area; ii) analysing the climate risks and vulnerabilities that exacerbate baseline challenges; iii) identifying a preferred solution to address the relevant climate impacts; iv) identifying barriers to the preferred solution; and v) designing innovative solutions to overcome the barriers and build the resilience of vulnerable communities. The final product is a detailed funding proposal along with a supporting feasibility study and other technical annexes. Main Tasks and Responsibilities:Lead the development of climate change adaptation projects and related funding proposals for, inter alia, the GCF, GEF and AF; taking primary responsibility for the technical project design in accordance with the requirements of the relevant fund. Engage with clients and other stakeholders as required by each project.Actively seek out and incorporate technical input from various relevant information sources, including desktop research, primary analysis and stakeholder engagements.Analyse data collected by the team and national counterparts and use the information accurately and meaningfully in projects.Plan and conduct field visits/missions, including developing mission agendas, arranging stakeholder consultations and producing mission reports. Lead the project team, including assigning tasks to junior consultants/analysts and setting clear internal deadlines. Develop and manage project work plans, including monitoring internal and external deadlines, and managing staff inputs against the project budget.Coordinate the work of project partners, including national consultants and C4 associates, to ensure timely and effective delivery of high-quality reports.Provide technical support to junior consultants for the design of adaptation projects. Support the team in identifying new work and provide technical input into the development of bids and tenders. This will include applying for contracts using the consultant's CV and ceding these contracts to the company.Provide regular feedback to the C4 team on lessons learned and the latest project developments.Requirements:EssentialA Masters or PhD in one or more of the following disciplines: ecology, agriculture, climatology, botany, zoology, geography, environmental science, development studies, development finance, and environmental economics.10 years or more of relevant work experience.Alignment with C4s Vision, Mission and Values.Experience identifying and developing projects in the fields of climate change adaptation or sustainable development would be ideal. Alternatively, experience in broader environmental consultancy, with a desire to gain experience in climate action, would also be considered. Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, national stakeholders and team members. Fluent in English, ideally C1 or C2 in English.Outstanding English writing skills.Willingness to take initiative and drive new ideas. An ability to work well under pressure, mentor and advise junior consultants.A strong project management track record and ability to meet deadlines are essential An interest in and enthusiasm for frequent and extensive travel to countries globally.A South African National, or holder of a South African work permit.
