Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The HSRC wishes to appoint an occupational health nurse to advise, screen, diagnose and treat/refer those who become sick or injured as well as evaluate work and non-work-related health risks and injuries with a view to improve employee's quality of life. An Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner (OHNP/Nursing Sister) may dispense medication based on Section 22C (1) (a) of The Medicine and Related Substances, 1965 (ACT 101 of 1965), provided s/he acquired a Dispensing licence via the necessary processes of the Department of Health. This includes having done valid training and certification of the Dispensing qualification and then application via DOH for the license for each site.

The work performed in this role is critical, within the scope of HR and within the HSRC as a whole, especially during this time of the COVID pandemic and lockdown.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSE

Pretoria

The successful incumbent will be based in Pretoria and will be required to travel to the other HSRC offices when required. The candidate will be appointed on a 5-year contract which may be renewed.
Job FunctionsNursingIndustriesResearchSpecificationKey responsibilities:
•Provide quality comprehensive community health care, primary curative health care and rehabilitation services to all employees of the HSRC;
•Manage the day care clinic and render emergency response and trauma care;
•Administer the COID act;
•Conduct occupational health awareness and training;
•Carry out workplace risk assessments;
•Establish and maintain occupational health risk profile;
•Design necessary preventive strategies to eliminate workplace hazards;
•Write reports and compile statistics for presentation to management;
•Provide pre- and post-HIV counselling;
•Monitor absenteeism;
•Implement medical surveillance programme according to employee's risk exposure/profile; Liaise with programme and unit heads on health matters;
•Manage positively and address health care delivery, resolve or refer care needs to the appropriate department/level of care or line manager;
•Attend to any other relevant and reasonable tasks as and when required.
RequirementsKey requirements:

•Post basic qualification with a duration of at least 3 years in Curative Skills in Primary Health
•Care accredited with the South African Nursing Council (SANC);
•B-Tech Degree in Occupational health and occupational hygiene or equivalent; SANC registration as a Professional Nurse; Possession of a Dispensing License;
•5 - 7 years’ experience in the health environment;

Minimum requirements

•Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations;
•Knowledge of procedures followed when dealing with the compensation commissioner, Employee Assistance Programmes and disability experience;
•Ability to identify health risks and determine appropriate action.
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
•Intermediate computer literacy;
•Assertiveness and ability to maintain confidentiality;
•Knowledge of environmental and health hazards within the workplace;
•Ability to work under pressure;
•Demonstrate high level of clinical competence;
•Reliable, displays integrity and sound ethics;
•Emotionally stable and capable of sound judgment.
