Principal Accountabilities / Key Performance Areas: Research, design and develop new speciality chemicals for the pulp and paper industries. Reformulate to optimise existing products for manufacturing ease and market competitiveness in efficacy and profit margins. Commission new products on manufacturing plants at Chloorkop. Launch/update product, raw material, technical & manufacturing data in Syspro System.
Job Function: Research and Development Source and review relevant literature. Prepare formulations - Optimize, if possible, around available plant equipment.
- Cost material and equipment requirements.
- Prepare Product Technical Data Sheet and MSDS.
ØSource raw materials after establishing material purchasing and acceptance specifications.ØPerform laboratory experiments.ØConduct pilot plant manufacturing trials.ØWrite technical reports.Reformulation of products in current range. Reformulate products to incorporate changes in raw materials and improved manufacturing methods.Rationalise and consolidate existing product range to reduce inventory and optimise plant utilisation.Optimise current products for application efficacy and increased profit margins.Investigate non-conformances w.r.t products & processes and offer solutions.Reformulate off-spec, sub-standard and redundant products for re-sale.Incorporate latest technology in current product range.Commission new products on manufacturing plants. Initiate and administer Hazard Operability Studies on manufacturing process, raw materials, intermediates, and final products.Place orders for raw materials and issue plant-manufacturing procedure.Manufacture the new product with the assistance of the plant personnel.Write trial commissioning reports.Finalize plant manufacturing procedures in conjunction with the Production Manager.Launch/update product, raw material and technical & manufacturing data in Syspro, QDocs and Achiever database. Ø Search & assimilate technical data on raw materials, products and processes.ØLoad and maintain formulae + manufacturing instructions on Syspro and Achiever.ØLoad and maintain material purchasing & acceptance specifications on Syspro and QDocs.ØLoad and maintain material & product QC & QA test templates on QDocs.Decision Making/Problem Solving: Substantiate full technical data with experimental evidence to allow Technical Manager to make decisions on the following:
Formulation of new products and work away recipes. Specifications for raw materials and final products. Plant manufacturing processes. Plant processing equipment for specific products. Person Specification: Education/Qualifications: Essential: Higher National Diploma/BSc (Honours) – Major in Chemistry. Preferred: MSc – Major in Organic Chemistry.Experience: Essential:
