We have been leading with purpose for over 130 years, building top brands such as Raid®, Glade®, Kiwi®, OFF!®, Windex®, Ziploc® and more, in virtually every country. Through these household names, we are making a positive difference to the world around us. But we only succeed with the combined vitality and strength of our 13,000 people who we truly value and support in their pursuit of individual and shared goals.
ROLE SUMMARYBased in Rosslyn, South Africa and reporting to the SHE Associate Manager, in this role you will support site-level deployment of SC Johnson’s Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) management practices to ensure compliance with local legal requirements and SCJ global standards.
You will collaborate with managers, supervisors, and shop-floor employees to identify and control health and safety hazards and adverse environmental impacts. While this role requires safety, health and environmental technical knowledge and experience, success is equally dependent on developing and supporting “champions” within the site to drive day-to-day ownership for SHE.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintains SHE compliance assurance processes, including self-assessments and compliance calendars, to enable compliance with applicable laws, permit authorizations and company standards.
Supports managers and supervisors in effective shop-floor implementation of SCJ’s safety, health and environmental standards.
Facilitates the deployment of employee-driven safety and environmental teams and provides technical support for team activities that promote a safe, healthy and environmentally responsible workplace.
Maintains and analyzes data from internal audit processes, including SHE-related GEMBA and behavior observations, to proactively identify conditions and behaviors that can lead to SHE incidents.
Partners with assigned stakeholders to drive timely, effective closure of identified SHE-related corrective and preventive actions.
Supports deployment and maintenance of training processes to ensure that required safety, health and environmental training is defined, addresses required content and is tracked to completion.
Provides technical support, including risk assessments and industrial hygiene sampling, to support compliance with regulatory and company standards.
Manages data collection and reporting to support compliance with environmental permits and authorizations.
Champions the investigation of safety and environmental incidents and ensures that corrective and preventive actions that address root causes are effectively deployed across the site.
Collaborates with the site’s engineering and maintenance teams to ensure that inspections, testing, preventive maintenance activities associated with SHE-critical equipment and applicable high-hazard chemical processes are defined and appropriately documented.
Verifies the accuracy of data in the company’s SHE database (e.g., Entropy) and analyzes the data to identify loss trends that can contribute to injuries and illnesses, adverse environmental impacts and SHE process non-conformances.
Supports stakeholder utilization of SCJ’s Management of Change (MOC) process to evaluate and manage potential health and safety hazards and environmental impacts associated with business activity changes.
Partners with operations, human resources and medical teams to effectively manage return-to-work programs for work-related injuries and illnesses.
Provides input on site-level SHE goals and budgets.
May provide day-to-day supervision to site SHE technicians.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, Environmental Science, Engineering or related discipline preferred
Minimum 3 years of SHE technical experience/responsibility in a global manufacturing organization. FMCG background in a chemical manufacturing environment will be considered a competitive advantage
Experience in high-hazard chemical process safety management (PSM) like the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration PSM standard or European Seveso Directive preferred.
Experience in driving day-to-day ownership of SHE processes to non-SHE program “champions preferred.
Knowledge of current health and safety technologies and processes such as ergonomics risk assessments, industrial hygiene exposure assessments, electrical arc flash hazard analyses and machinery safety principles preferred.
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
Effective verbal and written communication skills to clearly and concisely present information to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
Ability to effectively interact with others, establishing open, candid and trusting relationships to create win/win outcomes
You need to be legally eligible to work in country of application
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Full-time core office hours with expectation to be available for occasional nights/weekends
Up to 10% domestic travel may be required
Work in an office environment will be approximately 50% of time
