Senior Substation Design Engineer: Protection, Control, and TelecommunicationsWSP is one of the most diverse consulting firms in Africa, committed to diversity and equity in employment.Key Role: The candidate will primarily function as a Senior Protection and Control Engineer for transmission and distribution projects, with significant experience in secondary plant substation detail design.Responsibilities include:Designing, implementing, and optimizing protection and control systems for substations, ensuring reliable and efficient power system operation, and adhering to industry standards and safety protocols.Preparing detailed or functional designs, specifications, bills of quantity, and tender documents for substation protection and control systems according to international standards for clients in Southern Africa and beyond.Selecting and configuring protective relays and other protection/control equipment, including instrument transformers.Conducting relay settings calculations, coordination studies, and preparing related reports.Developing protection and control philosophies and producing associated protection schemes for power systems.Specifying protection, metering, SCADA, automation, teleprotection, and telecommunication equipment, including secure communications protocols like IEC.Reviewing detailed designs submitted by contractors against specifications.Attending stakeholder meetings and preparing minutes.Conducting site audits and contributing to project scoping.Undertaking fault investigations and post-fault analysis.Supporting during construction and commissioning, including technical queries, factory inspections, testing, and progress monitoring.Preparing and reviewing project scope, methodology, schedules, and budgets for consultancy proposals.Maintaining relationships with internal divisions, external contractors, and clients.Staying updated with technical quality management procedures, developments, and specifications relevant to the discipline.Health and Safety: Model SHEQ standards, influence safety behavior, and promote a safe working environment.

Be aware of health and safety impacts on substation construction contracts.Qualifications and Experience:A Degree in Electrical Engineering from an internationally recognized institution.10-15 years of engineering experience in protection, control, and telecommunications.Professional registration with a recognized institution.Proficiency in DigSilent or ETAP.Experience with CAD design software such as MicroStation.Experience with system studies is advantageous.Key Competencies and Skills:Fluent in English, both spoken and written.Ability to work remotely within a dispersed team using collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams.Strong technical report writing skills.Effective time, quality, and effort management to deliver within constraints.Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.What's in it for you?
