JOB PURPOSE:

The Senior Researcher is an academic member of the University of Pretoria’s Mamelodi Campus research team. The incumbent’s responsibilities includes conducting research pertaining to programmes offered on the Mamelodi campus with specific reference to ensuring smooth transition between basic and higher education. S/he will execute research projects aligned with the faculty plan as directed by the Head of Community Based Research and Postgraduate Education and the Dean. S/he will assist the Head of Research and Postgraduate Education in developing inter-, multi- and transdisciplinary research and internationalisation agendas that cut across activities in the niche areas of the Mamelodi Collaborative. In particular in the Extended Curriculum Programmes (ECPs), Pre-University Academy (PUA), the Mamelodi Community of Learning Collaborative (MCLC) and the Mamelodi Collaborative. The incumbent collaborates with the PUA manager, campus staff, relevant support units and faculties within the University. S/he should be an experienced STEM ( science, technology, engineering and mathematics ) education researcher and proactively assist the Head of Research and Postgraduate Education and the Dean with the development and execution of the research programme of the campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

- Research and research development within the Pre University Academy (PUA):
- Lead at least 60% of projects within the PUA in consultation with the Dean and the Head of Research and Postgraduate Programmes;
- Develop a research culture among the course coordinators, facilitators and student assistants employed within the PUA;
- Publish as least two accredited journal article per year in one or more of the pillars of the PUA in consultation with the Dean and the Head Community Based Research and Postgraduate Studies;
- Assist the Head of Community-Based Research and Postgraduate Education in the writing of proposals to external funders for the funding PUA programmes;

- Research and research Development in the Mamelodi Community of Learning Collaborative (MCLC):
- Take responsibility and progress of research projects within the three pillars of the MCLC;
- Conduct research on the efficacy of MCLC projects especially in relation to tertiary readiness and awareness;
- Publish as least one accredited journal article per year in one or more of the pillars of the MCLC in consultation with the Dean and the Head Community Based Research and Postgraduate Studies;
- Assist the Head of Community-Based Research and Postgraduate Education in the writing of proposals to external funders for the funding MCLC programmes;

- Research and Research Development in the Extended Curriculum Programmes (ECP):
- Take overall responsibility for the Student Referral System, and conduct research and publish in the various components of the Referral System;
- Publish as least one accredited journal article per year on an aspect of the Student Referral System in consultation with the Dean and the Head Community Based Research and Postgraduate Studies;
- Identify which papers funded from the Foundation Training Grant should can be used to improve teaching and learning in Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP);
- Assist the Head of Community-Based Research and Postgraduate Education in the writing of proposals to external funders for the funding of ECPs and PUA programmes;

- Research and Research Development within the Mamelodi Collaborative (MC):
- Develop a research project: From STEM to STEAM;
- Conduct research on the efficacy of MC projects and their impact on the community;

- Liaison and Stakeholder Relationship Management:
- Attend all meetings of T&L, Research, MCLC and PUA with a view to provide advice on research opportunities;
- Attend all the community engagement related events of the campus to get a sense of the research needs of the campus.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- PhD in a STEM ( science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field with a postgraduate qualification in Education OR PhD in STEM Education;
- Publication record;
- At least five years’ research experience;
- Three years’ experience in supervision of postgraduate research;
- Publications in the field of expertise;
- Publication record in accredited journals;
- Evidence of writing reports for external funding;
- Experience in the co-ordination of several research projects;
- Experience in community based research;
- Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research data analysis.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Thorough knowledge and understanding of higher education research and research management landscape;
- Thorough understanding of:
- The challenges in STEM fields in the schooling system;
- The need to develop emerging community based research;
- Community based inter-, multi and trans-disciplinary research;

- Experience in international collaboration and presenting at national and international conferences and colloquia;
- Understanding of data and the use of data in decision making;
- Good verbal and written communication skills;
- Academic writing;
- Demonstrate solid interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills and establish and sustain good working relationships with staff, students, visitors, national and international partners and service providers;
- Take initiative, i.e. seek new opportunities and take accountability to deliver results;
- Be flexible, demonstrate the ability to adapt to, and work effectively in a diverse set of situations, with individuals and groups;
- Portray a positive image of the Campus and the University of Pretoria;
- Present a positive, upbeat, friendly demeanour even under difficult circumstances;
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality, integrity and professionalism;

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

- Three years’ experience in qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research;
- Good understanding of the South African higher education system;
- Understanding of the basic education sector and problems of redress in the sector;
- Valid driver’s licence.

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
