The Global Patient Solutions (GPS) business unit, focuses on ensuring effective execution of the company mission in low and lower-middle income countries in Central America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.
Medical Affairs has an exciting opportunity to provide scientific and medical leadership for GPS projects, programs and initiatives in Africa--based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This position provides leadership in Africa through development, implementation and evaluation of activities that highlight the public health and medical impact of Gilead access programs in Anglophone Countries in Africa. The position will contribute to cross functional planning and strategies to increase the safe and effective use of Gilead’s products for HIV, Chronic Viral Hepatitis B and C, and Invasive Fungal Diseases.
Essential Duties and Job Functions:
Productively develops and manages projects and programs relevant to GPS-MEDICAL AFFAIRS priorities identified in Sub-Saharan Africa
Contributes to development of a research agenda in support of GPS strategies and GPS-MEDICAL AFFAIRS goals and objectives in Sub-Saharan Africa
Develops and manages effective collaborations, partnerships and coalitions with public and private sector organizations with interest in activities related to public health and medical education in Sub-Saharan Africa
Applies principles of implementation science to facilitate the safe and effective scale of Gilead products to improve health outcomes in prioritized Therapeutic Areas in Sub-Saharan Africa
Provides technical and administrative expertise related to the medical and public health aspects needed to launch and support Gilead products, as needed
Supports innovative use of digital technologies for communication, disease advocacy, monitoring or data collection in support of strengthening of health systems
Develops evidence-based communication packages tailored to internal and external audiences and stakeholders
Support operational excellence through development of processes for generating performance metrics and tracking outcomes of GPS-MEDICAL AFFAIRS programs and communicating results to key stake holder audiences
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
Advanced degree (e.g., MD, DO, PharmD, PhD, NP/PA)
Pharmaceutical industry experience is required
Extensive clinical experience in infectious disease and/ or liver disease with achievements in clinical research, public health and education
High level fluency in written and spoken English
Demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative, cross-functional environment with internal and external colleagues, including representatives of academia, research, medical, public health and affected communities.
Strong communication skills: effectively present and discuss scientific data in both technical and non-technical venues.
Demonstrated strong leadership in driving innovation and working in a collaborative, culturally diverse, cross disciplinary environment,
Excellent organizational and communication skills with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and projects
Demonstrated ability to align medical and public health strategies
Programmatic experience in Africa highly desirable
Familiarity with Microsoft office suite of tools
Travel required: 25 percent, mostly within Africa and internationally
