the company is wholly-owned by anglo operations limited(under its anglo american coal South Africa division)
new is situated on the banks of the vaal river in the in the maccauvlei area immediately south of vereneeging in the free state province.
it was established in the 1980's to supply coal to eskom lethabo power station
the colliery uses opencast stip mining to remove coal and currently the mine produces close to 18 million tons(mt)per annum.
