About Strategic Risk Management Strategic Risk Management (SRM) is a business-critical department in Discovery Health, responsible for ensuring sustainable and equitable management of scheme funds to deliver patient care.
It comprises multiple teams of clinical, actuarial, and managerial experts striving to maximize value for members requiring care.
SRM is a fast-paced, highly visible, and complex area of healthcare management offering opportunities for executive visibility, external client engagement, and innovation.
Key Purpose To oversee the hospital contracting strategy and implementation, including commercial contracting for hospitals, acute hospitals, day hospitals, sub-acute hospitals, psychiatric facilities, and in-facility procured items reimbursed by the Schemes.
This role involves owning Discovery Health's hospital contracting strategy and execution, managing relationships, leading negotiations on commercial matters, and drafting contract terms to fulfill Discovery Health's mandate.
Areas of Responsibility Manage contracting strategy across hospitals, day hospitals, and other facilities Oversee Scheme spend (~R39bn, with ~R28bn hospital spend, representing about 60% of Scheme spend) Design and contract hospital networks to reduce care costs Drive sustainable annual tariff increases with contracting parties Maintain provider engagement aligned with business strategy Negotiate contract terms with corporate service providers at the executive level Oversee analytical contracting models Ensure stakeholder adherence to contractual obligations and complete administrative tasks Enforce SLAs with internal stakeholders and contracted parties Consult on legal matters related to contract management Stay informed on relevant legislation and communicate implications Collaborate with other Discovery divisions Personal Attributes and Skills The successful candidate should demonstrate: Initiative and project management skills Problem-solving and analytical skills Effective communication Innovation, enthusiasm, and drive Self-leadership and leadership of others Strategic thinking Clinical expertise Education and Experience Honors Degree (Clinical / Commercial) 5-10 years' relevant experience in contracting or strategic sourcing, preferably in healthcare Significant healthcare industry experience and understanding of key clinical and business issues Excellent interpersonal and problem resolution skills Innovative and ideas-driven Preferred Experience and Knowledge Managed Care Experience 1-2 years Leadership experience Knowledge of Discovery Health products EMPLOYMENT EQUITY The Company's approved Employment Equity Plan and Targets will be considered during recruitment.
