Environmental Specialist

We have partnered with one of the leading companies in global energy, and they are seeking a skilled Permitting Manager to oversee the procurement of all environmental authorizations, permits, licenses, land use rights, and consents required for the development and implementation of renewable energy projects in South Africa.
This role will ensure compliance with internal ESG requirements, South African legislation, and lender requirements, supporting a high-impact renewable energy portfolio.Key Responsibilities:Manage the permitting workstream throughout all phases of the project, including inception, bid preparation, transaction closing, construction, and operations.Conduct early-phase development screening, red flag assessments, and due diligence investigations.Lead biodiversity monitoring programs and manage specialists to ensure compliance with industry guidelines (e.g., bird and bat monitoring, riverine rabbit monitoring).Review and assess reports from specialists to ensure methodologies align with requirements and guidelines.Identify project risks related to environmental permitting and communicate those risks to the broader development team.Lead the environmental authorization process for renewable energy facilities, including Basic Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments, Water Use Licenses, and biodiversity permits.Manage external service providers, including Environmental Assessment Practitioners (EAPs), ensuring deliverables are completed on time and within budget.Assist with appeals and work with environmental lawyers to respond to any legal challenges.Oversee the procurement of land use rights, including site control, servitudes, and wayleaves.Develop and maintain permitting registers and stay informed about changes in permitting processes and legal requirements.Engage with stakeholders, including environmental working groups, local municipalities, and government officials, ensuring smooth collaboration.Set up and chair regular project meetings to track the permitting process and ensure the team is informed.Provide accurate internal and external project updates and reports.Qualifications/Experience Required:Post-graduate degree in Environmental Sciences or a related field (B.Sc.
Hons and/or M.Sc.
preferred).SACNASP and/or EAPASA registration (or candidate status) is an advantage.Minimum of 5 years' experience in an EAP consulting role with project management responsibilities.Previous experience as a permitting manager during Risk Mitigation and BESS IPP Procurement Programs is highly desirable.Experience managing permitting processes during project transaction closings.Fluency in Afrikaans and English.Key Skills:Excellent communication and leadership abilities.High level of flexibility and adaptability to changing project environments.Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and negotiate successful outcomes.Experience working in a matrix organization and leading cross-functional teams.Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team under pressure.Note: POSITION REQUIRES SOMEONE WITH A WILLINGNESS TO TRAVEL EXTENSIVELY BETWEEN SITES!
