A Functional architect is responsible to ensure that the various IT solutions implementing business functionality, forms a functionally cohesive whole from a Business Unit and Enterprise perspective. The functional architect will work with the various IT enterprise architects to ensure that there is overall alignment between the various functional and enabler epics (as per the Scaled Agile Framework). The functional architect will also play a key role together with the IT Enterprise Architect’s (EA’s) to develop and maintain the various IT Architecture roadmaps to ensure alignment with the business strategy and the various enabler and functional epics.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities
Execute the Architecture Strategy to present architectural recommendations that are in line with the strategic vision for the enterprise:
Assess and analyse business requirements so as to present architectural recommendations that are in line with the strategic vision for the enterprise and wider industry best practice.
Define strategic initiatives, in collaboration with the IT Enterprise Architects and map out strategic execution plans that satisfy business objectives for desirable outcomes, focusing on the functional architecture dimension.
Perform the required functional architecture assessments of recommended solutions.
Participate and conduct the necessary strategic workshops and engagements to develop and evolve the required enterprise–wide architectures.
Lead transformation consulting engagements to support the roadmap and business case development for Enterprise Architecture services and assist the client in architecting next generation platforms including capabilities.
Recommend assessments to gain insights into the client’s current and future states which will be used as input into technology roadmaps and business case for change.
Assist IT Enterprise Architects in defining and maintaining the appropriate technology architecture strategy to support the Business objectives and enable the overall Group IT strategy implementation.
Ensure the execution of the defined architectures for the business is in line with the IT architecture strategy by engaging with various key stakeholders.
Assist IT Enterprise Architects in providing and regularly updating approved technology architecture roadmaps to support the business objectives and the implementation of IT strategy.
Track and measure the extent of compliance and manage deviations.
Recommend remedial action where it does not adhere to the relevant Group architecture strategy and principles.
Allow for effective and productive evaluation of vendor offerings against business requirements, principles and constraints. Be able to generate inventive and innovative ideas for new business revenue generating models.
Communicate and Interpret Business Intent to enable the appropriate IT Architecture is being defined:
Understand and elicit the business intent (of the Business Epics), by being able to identify areas of critical business need and risk priority.
Communicate (in business friendly terms) the IT architecture strategy to all relevant business stakeholders.
Communicate the business intent of the Business Epics to the relevant IT Architect so that the appropriate IT Architecture is defined.
Track and report progress against agreed actions using appropriate risk register.Execute an awareness and advisory service to Business so as to provide input, as required, on large-scale projects and road maps for compatibility with the vision:
Map stakeholder engagement map and ensure that regular engagements are conducted with the relevant IT Architecture Teams, key stakeholders and relevant business partners.
Plan and execute and focused communications around specific architecture decisions, roadmaps and strategies to relevant stakeholders and consumers.
Work with the IT EAs, be the trusted Technology Architecture business partner to relevant Business Unit Chief Information Officers and Business Information
Officers to provide appropriate architecture direction and recommendations to meet business, regulatory, legal and policy requirements whilst addressing the strategic objective to simplify the overall technology and application landscape.
Collaborate with Business Information Officers (BIO’s) Business Information Security Officers (BISOs) and other Group stakeholders to ensure that services offered are relevant, timely, of appropriate quality and cost-effective
Define roadmaps that optimally exploits the investment and functionality in the new Core Banking assets (SAP), which will enable the identification and definition short term wins and long term strategic changes.
Define opportunities for functional exploitation of the new Core Banking Assets (SAP). Determine where functionality in legacy systems can be transitioned to new Core Banking systems. Determine where functionality in Core Banking systems are underutilised.
Identify and define short-term wins (“low hanging fruit) as well as longer term strategic changes to exploit the Core Banking functionality. Incorporate these opportunities into the relevant roadmaps working within the various constraints.
Provide input, as required, on large-scale projects and road maps for compatibility with the vision.
Facilitate and drive the development of architecture position papers detailing definition, trends as well as current and possible usage of emerging technologies.
Update and review the roadmaps and opportunities on a regular basis.
Communicate the roadmaps and opportunities to IT and business stakeholders.Define, execute and alignment of Enabler Epics to align to strategic themes if the organisation
Assist business in the defining business epics aligned to the organisations strategic themes.
Be the Architecture representative at the Product Manager Guild.
Alignment of the outputs from the Product Lab’s at a business unit and enterprise level.
Participate in developing and aligning business and enabler epics at a business unit and enterprise level.
Alignment of the business and enabler epics across the delivery vehicles across all business units and enterprise.
Ensure adequate communication and understanding of business and enabler epics across business units and enterprise.
Track and report progress against agreed actions. Escalate to appropriate forums the roadmap consequences of delays. Provide mitigating options for remedial actions.
Incorporate and align epics into relevant roadmaps.Define and maintain Functional Architecture to define the relevant architecture that supports the business strategy and intent:
Obtain deep knowledge of the business capabilities of the Core Banking Applications (be the SME of the functional architecture). Work with the relevant Architects to elicit and define the relevant functional Architecture that supports the business strategy and business intent.
Participate in and conduct the necessary Vendor and relevant stakeholder workshops to develop and evolve the required functional architecture. Ensure that the Functional Architecture is driven by the business priorities of the organisation and that the requirements driving the overall architecture are managed consistently and effectively.
Track and report progress against agreed actions using appropriate risk and decision registers.
Represent architectures and solutions tabled for escalation, and factually illustrate areas of contention and debate.
Facilitate the creation, maintenance of and adherence to architectural principles (across the enterprise and within the Information Architecture domain).
Promote use of shared capabilities across business units and the enterprise. Incorporate and Update Roadmaps with solution outcomes.Preferred Qualification and Experience
First Degree or Master Degree preferrable
More than 10 years: Significant experience as a functional specialist and business / systems analyst ideally with deep experience of Core Banking Systems. Experience with the complete information system life cycle.
More than 10 years: Functional solution design delivery in large domestic or global institutions. Ability to deal with all levels of the business and technology stakeholders across large organizations.
7-10 years: Proven ability in translating business strategy and requirements to IT stakeholders and to translate IT considerations for business stakeholders.
