Cost Accountant: Fixed Assets

This role is primarily responsible for safeguarding the company's assets and ensuring sound financial controls around asset acquisitions and disposals.
The role also involves maintaining an up-to-date Fixed Asset Register compliant with IFRS standards.
All asset transactions must be approved by EXCO through the Asset and Liabilities Committee and aligned with the Board-approved Delegation of Authority (DOA) framework.
This position reports to the Finance Manager.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in developing and implementing strategic plans for the finance department.
Coordinate and consolidate the fixed assets (capital expenditure) budget.
Prepare monthly budget vs. actual reports for discussion with Heads of Departments (HoDs).
Obtain variance explanations from HoDs monthly.
Submit all monthly reports by the 8th of each month.
Coordinate asset acquisitions through the Assets and Liabilities Committee or as per the DOA.
Maintain the fixed asset register monthly in accordance with IFRS.
Evaluate asset acquisitions using the Fixed Asset Case Study Evaluation.
Understand and apply Net Present Value calculations.
Record fixed assets by establishing procedures, forms, and controls.
Recommend updates to accounting policies related to fixed assets.
Assign tag numbers to fixed assets for tracking purposes.
Implement sensor-based tracking for high-value items.
Record new acquisitions and disposals in the accounting system.
Track and record project costs in fixed asset accounts and close accounts upon project completion.
Reconcile fixed asset subsidiary ledger with general ledger.
Calculate depreciation for all fixed assets.
Maintain records of wear and tear for tax purposes.
Assist in confirming deferred tax balances related to fixed asset accounting.
Update schedules of accumulated depreciation and fixed assets.
Perform Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) calculations for applicable assets.
Assess obsolescence potential of fixed assets.
Conduct periodic reviews of intangible assets for impairment.
Perform physical inventory counts of fixed assets periodically.
Recommend assets for disposal to management.
Perform fixed asset analyses as requested by management.
Create audit schedules and collaborate with auditors on fixed asset audits.
Represent the company in fixed asset-related audits.
Monitor fixed asset spending against capital budgets and authorizations.
Ensure records are always audit-ready and able to provide audit information within 3 days.
Respond promptly to audit queries.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

BCom in Accounting or related field.
At least 5 years of post-articles/internship experience.
Valid code B/EB driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES

Proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, and reporting systems.
Knowledge of the Companies Act and IFRS standards.
Strong understanding of fixed assets and general ledger management.
Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Strong interpersonal, time management skills, and high integrity.
Experience supporting financial operations at a mining or similar operation is advantageous.
Supervisory experience of junior team members is preferred.
