CORE PURPOSE OF JOB The Department of Physics at Nelson Mandela University (NMU) is renowned for its excellent academic programs and its outstanding research contributions in the field of condensed matter physics and optical fibre physics. The department is strategically positioning itself to strengthen its teaching, research and community engagement responsibility. The candidate should have substantial teaching experience at university level, as well as a proven research record related to optical fibre characterization and optical communication technology. The successful candidate will teach courses in both undergraduate and post-graduate programmes do research, manage international research collaborations and supervise MSc and PhD students take leadership in engagement programmes KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS Facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented by -Nelson Mandela University at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Review and design academic curricula. Do advanced research in the field of optical fibre physics. Contribute to community engagement and be involved in the core administrative functions of the University. CORE COMPETENCIES Effective lecturing of undergraduate and post-graduate physics theory courses at the university level. Strong skills in the interfacing of equipment and related programming will be an advantage. Proven ability to secure external research funding. Ability to work under pressure and against tight deadlines. Good interpersonal skills. REQUIREMENTS For Senior Lecturer: Candidates must possess a PhD degree in Physics with at least 3 to 5 years of relevant (post-PhD) teaching, as well as research experience in optical fibre physics. A track record of publications in internationally recognized journals and participation in local and international conferences. Successful supervision of post-graduate candidates. Evidence of national and international collaboration will be an advantage. Evidence of emergent leadership role in an academic unit or research team will be an added advantage. Registration as a Certified Physicist with the South African Institute of Physics or as a Professional Natural Scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions will be a strong advantage. An NRF rating and/or registration with a relevant professional body will be an advantage. For Associate Professor: Candidates must possess a PhD degree in Physics with at least 5 to 7 years of relevant (post-PhD) teaching, as well as research experience in optical fibre physics. A track record of publications in internationally recognized journals and participation in local and international conferences. Successful supervision of post-graduate candidates. Evidence of national and international collaboration. Evidence of securing external research grants. Evidence of leadership role in management of an academic unit or research in team. Registration as a Certified Physicist with the South African Institute of Physics or as a Professional Natural Scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions will be a strong advantage. An NRF rating and/or registration with a relevant professional body will be a strong advantage. Note : It will be required of the candidate to present a 10-15 minute lecture on a topic relevant to this post to an appropriate panel.
